Comenius Secondary School, Germany

General re-design and refurbishment of an existing 70’s concrete frame building with a new teaching extension. Design scope included the re-arrangement of existing accommodation to comply with latest teaching requirements and fire regulations. New staircases had to be incorporated and general classroom sizes increased which lead to the requirement of an additional teaching block. An authority’s requirement was to upgrade the building’s energy performance to achieve Passive House standard, one of the first buildings of this kind in Germany at time of completion in 2009. This requirement led to the complete removal of the existing low performing envelope and installation of more than 3000sqm oak framed, triple glazed curtain walling to name one of the features.

This project was designed and delivered while leading the project during employment at Kohlbecker Architekten|Ingenieure in Partnership with Bannwarth & Ludwig Architekten, Germany.
